During World War II, fighter planes and bombers were a must. This resulted in an air-force division in the military for each nation involved. Germany had the Luftwaffe, the Soviet Union had the Soviet Air Force, Great Britain had the Royal Air Force, and the United States had the Army Air Corps. Although Japan didn't have a separate military corps for their Air-force, they were one of the most successful nations at air battles.
